Andy Goodrich’s life is turned upside down when his wife enters rehab, leaving him alone with their young children. Goodrich leans on Grace, his daughter from his first marriage, as he ultimately evolves into the father she never had. Writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer wrote the title role specifically for Michael Keaton. "I wrote it 100 percent with him in mind," she said, "to the point where if he had said no, I would have buried it and myself in the yard.". Following my harrowing experiences with Caroline Lindy’s "Your Monster" and Megan Park’s "My Old Ass" two very romantic women’s films that explore the emotional states of egotistical women, I see this second film about self-absorbed women. Are there still altruistic women today? For my mother’s generation, this was extremely prevalent. It is clear that women’s emancipation has had a negative impact on women’s attitudes. This time I was not at all tormented because I got the opportunity to stand aside and watch how women of all ages – including the youngest, under ten years old, manage to shift the blame for their selfishness onto a selfless father, with whom I could easily identify, when he devotes all his time to trying to provide his family with a respectable standard of living by completely immersing himself in running an art gallery. The woman he meets promises him an excellent deal shortly before breaking it and leaving him bankrupt. His wife simply decides to go to treatment, leaving him with the children. The girl doesn’t complain about anything and he has to beg her to accept his apologies. And because he was so preoccupied with his gallery when she was ten, his older daughter yells at him hysterically. None of them really understand how much he loves them all and what he has to endure, isolated, ruined by circumstances and all those female whims, none of them help him with his problems. How can they be so cruel, so vindictive and so oblivious to the offers people make? None of them notice his polite drowning (on the movie poster) without complaint… As the disappointed pregnant daughter, Mila Kunis gives an outstanding performance. I’ve never seen her so good. I recently got the title of "Grandma" and she looks just like my pregnant daughter. And OMG, her kind and hysterical moments are just a one-to-one copy of the extremes I had to go through with mine. Goodrich even introduces himself as grandpa and dad to the youngest girl he meets at the end. My daughter prevented me from experiencing that beautiful moment, so that was truly the best scene in the movie, making me smile with tears in my eyes. The movie started off slow, hence the six stars, with the usual cliché of a clumsy father left alone with his kids (which I’ve never had a problem with), but in the second half, everyone was at the party when he drowned and the movie became much more original and engaging.
